In addition to the aerodynamic advantages of skinny tires, tubulars, etc. in this discussion, I've always understood that *weight* out at the rim was a big factor as well. IOW, the lighter the rim, tire, etc. the easier it is to maintain a high momentum (cadence), hence the use of these components by the pro's.
