I think you've said it well here.

I also have a Saluki and use different wheelsets/tires for a wider range of 
purpose too. I can't quite make it into an Atlantis, but with sturdy wheels and 
40 mm tires it can go lots of places. I took it on tour this year with about 40 
lbs of gear (5 front, 35 rear) With lighter wheels and 32 mm pumped up tires, 
and no luggage, it's reasonably quick. So, there is overlap based on equipment 
with each bike, but each bike has a range that the others do not extend all the 
way to. The current line up seems wider as you say, and has some excellent 
offerings, but those of us with passe model names need not fret. Our bikes will 
keep up with the new models just fine.

 Is it fair to say that the sprectrum used to be Ram-Saluki-Atlantis, but now 
it has widened a bit to Roadeo-AHH-Bombadil with the center point being pretty
