Jonathan, IMO the porteur rack is far too versatile a rack to limit to only one way of use. Ride it bare for those chance days you find a small Weber grill on the road or want to pick up a case of beer after a ride. I strap my tent and sleeping bag and whatever other large/odd shaped things on it for camping. Get a giant basket and attach it with mini-bungees for grocery runs or picnics. A waterproof rack bag is essential for rainy days or running lots of errands and not wanting to leave things in a basket. Keep no way permanent and get the best of all worlds
