Check his tires for sizing, the 52cm Clem is likely 650B? Having an official rack that this straps to looks far better/stronger/heartier than those long, untriangulated stays they call mounting hardware. It's the way I would go.
He should also be aware that weight on the front will effect handling. He may want to strap some weight to his handlebars in a bag and see how he likes the ride so he has an idea of what a front rack will do. Obviously, this rack/crate will handle differently than a bag strapped to the handlebars, but it will put him in the ballpark of understanding.
