When I did my Varsity rebuild circa 1971, one problem I had with the conversion was that, with a 39 or 40 t ring, 16 and 18 t cogs, and a heavy 1/8" wide chain, the chain would smack the newly hand-sprayed stay roughly over bumps. I had some vague idea of chrome, and (this being Nairobi, where bike parts were very scarce) I made my own chainstay protector from metal cut from a tin can, the interior silver more or less giving a chromed effect. I cut a more or oess 7" strip with tags fore and aft and on either side, punched holes in the tags, and used them to clamp the thing to the stay with small nuts and bolts.
