I have to agree about the stainless steel or chrome chain stay protectors. I've often looked for one myself, but they've all but disappeared from the bike part/accessory scene in recent years - except for those advertised from the UK and, as you say, shipping cost would be high. There was also a time, as far as that goes, when many high-end bikes came with the drive-side chain stay chrome plated for this very reason. Those days, too, seem to be long gone.
