Some things to consider that in our experience with four children eliminate 
the "brutal" so many parents experience:

-- Breast feeding
-- Co-sleeping (no drugs or alcohol or soft beds)

Baby and mom quickly learn to sleep all night, even as nursing. It's the 
lugged steel of parenting. Grin.
