I concur that the maps Doug suggested (and the trail networks they describe) are awesome.
I think your route through Janesville and Fort Atkinson is good; the Peace and Ice Age trails connect those towns. And then the Glacial Drumlin trail takes you east into Milwaukee. The NW IL section (Clinton - Freeport - Janesville) doesn't have any trails to use, but I bet those country roads aren't too busy, especially if you ride the gravel.
