I can throw in a +1 for the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" monitor that The Wirecutter recommends. I've got two of them (one at work and one at home) and I love the IPS panel, very easy on the eyes when looking at lots of documents and spreadsheets (as I do). I'm not sure if you're limiting the screen size to 17" for budget or space purposes, but I would think two of these would be side-by-side would be a killer setup.
