Yes, you can do that.  The two shifters have the same barrel diameter, and 
will both pull the same total amount of cable.  

A Right side Shimano barcon shifter, installed on the Left grip in the 
inside position on a Paul Thumbie, in friction mode, can be used to actuate 
your front derailer. A Left side Shimano barcon shifter, installed on the 
Right grip in the inside position on a Paul Thumbie can be used to actuate 
your rear derailer.
