Thanks. I don't see clearly how to use a strong glue. The problem is that,
even if I broke the section off fully, and glued the separated surfaces
together with a strong glue, these surfaces are very thin -- the wood is
only 4 mm thick.

This suggests the need for some sort of backing, but (1) backing on the
hidden backside, if too thick, will interfere with the chain; and (2) if on
the visible outside, will look bad.

I've thought of simply smearing some strong, clear packing tape with
something like Barge Cement, but I don't know enough about this stuff to
anticipate whether this will supply adequate lateral strength.

I guess I could apply strategically placed popsicle sticks as
reinforcements, this on the outside.

I've got a spare Pro 5 Vis and newly acquire 50 t chainring and, in
addition, a recently replaced 113 Phil bb (plus a stash of cogs and
freewheels). But this seems to me to be guilding a sow's ear, to merrily
mix my metaphors.

Thus, I am left with the stock crankset, which is cheap POS in quality, and
looks best with this OEM guard to hide the cheapness.

Fretting about minor aesthetic problems, I fully agree, but --- just in
case ....
