Steve, I'll post load photos eventually. The other day I rode home with ~25
lb in one pannier; it wasn't ideal but it was certainly manageble.

Michael: I'm not particularly handy myself; most of the technique was
simply to force myself to go slowly and think about each step in advance.

I used a Dremel, cutting at the forward end, so the alteration would be
less visible. A Dremel makes a pretty straight cut relatively easy to do. I
then used snips to cut long, gradual bevels; and snipped away ~3 mm along
the rolled edge along the uncut portion to allow folding. I then used
pliers to start a fold along the cut perimeter and finished it off by
gently tapping the folds with a hammer. The result is not perfectly
symmetrical, but it's close, and of course the manipulation blemished the
finish, but again, it's not too bad and it's hidden under the bottom
bracket.
