The ghost of weather past loomed heavy in my mind, or maybe the experience
of degraded braking in the pouring rain of the past event, so I took the
commuter. It seemed like a good plan for an hour or so, benign for a few
hours after that and not the right choice for the last hour.

I realized too late that I was not spending adequate effort documenting by
pictures, my efforts were being concentrated on pedaling. I did spend a lot
of time with riders who've never ridden the places, distances or hills
which we were. I was surprised by the determination displayed by the many
part time riders.

Since I was riding my commuter had adequate supplies for my own support (in
event of worst case weather) and helped a rider with a flat who had no tube
patch or pump. He marveled at my frame pump (that's twice in two weeks!)
exclaiming "what's that?" I handed off a couple Clif Bars and water bottles
to a couple who were near bonking a few hundred yards short of a hill top
and a downhill to a rest stop.

The upside of my bike choice was that it really goes downhill and handled
with no fear on the 700 x 38c Marathons. It helped that the route seemed to
tie together many legs of rides our little Tuesday evening group takes so
each piece was very familiar territory.

Next time I'll err toward the Ram. The difference in fatigue between a bike
that planes and one that doesn't was very evident, the Disc Trucker took it
out of me with its lack of suppleness, without a doubt. I can say I had
fatigue in my knees and thighs that I don't have after long rides on the
Rambouillet.

One interesting interaction was as I came up a steep approach to a red
stoplight at a junction with a road where we were to turn left and one of
the self-congradualatory group commented that the sensor wasn't tripping
because all of them were on carbon fiber bikes. Probably just timed light
but once green I just rode around them and uphill for the next mile, never
to be seen again. Some thoughts are better left unsaid.

A more leisurely time planned for the next, more pictures on route. Here's
what I've got: https://goo.gl/photos/nxTr2hwvsbUNfF13A
