I've used clear shellac on white cotton tape. After enough coats, it's a very nice muted yellow color, kind of a yellow-tan color. I would think it would have the effect you're seeking. The more you put on, the less bright it would be, although it'll get nice and shiny if you put enough coats on. That's how I like it.
