Bill, This is an open group accessible to (almost) anyone, so of course you must be careful, there is no official help from the group if something goes bad so your best defense is to be on alert.
In general most of the buying and selling is between established members so it's pretty safe. For less established members i would take a few extra precautions, asking to talk on the phone, verifying their address/personal information (disturbingly easy to do in with google....) to make sure everything lines up. Paypal does offer some protection when you pay for goods (not 'personal/gift') but it can still be dicey so i wouldn't depend solely on that. In the end, use your gut, if a deal feels too good to be true, or something feels off, walk away.
