There is definitely a Rivendell thing where they admire the worn out. And it appeals to me too. Especially if you rode the bike 5,000 miles and the decal got chipped. I think it shows (1) that you actually ride your bicycle; and (2) that you 're not such a mindless consumerist that you need to replace your bike every year.
Faded, worn out, blue jeans have been popular, I theorize, for the same reasons. But this doesn't mean that I'd want a hole in my blue jeans when I walk out of the store.
