Patrick,

Yes, that statement does sound a bit contradictory in retrospect. Let
me clarify. Jim asked me if I "expected monetary
consideration, or credit or something specific." With regard to those
specific expectations I truly had none. In other words, I didn't
expect Rivendell to give me money or credit for the problem. However,
I DID have expectations for the quality. Let me offer the only thing I
could relate it to.

I collect guitars, both electric and acoustic of generally high end
quality (Olson, vintage Fender, Andrew White, etc.). Occasionally, I
will have a guitar completely taken apart, stripped, sanded and
refinished or repainted. I would guess (and this is only a guess) that
the time to do this to a guitar and the time to do a bike might be
similar. There are many components to disassemble on both and a good
deal of prep work, not to mention the actual painting and then
reassembly. I've payed amounts of money for a guitar that were similar
to what I was paying to have the Rivendell repainted. On the guitars I
know firsthand that I can go over it with a loupe and not find one
single flaw. I assumed (admittedly poorly) that the same would hold
true for a bike that I payed to have repainted. That didn't happen and
I was simply surprised. I'm not really disappointed in the paint job;
I was just surprised a little by and by Rivendell's reaction (or my
perception that they didn't seem upset or surprised by my statements
regarding the work).

You're perfectly correct in saying that being a novice isn't an
excuse. I'm a 38 year old med student and father of two very young
daughters and I simply let my schedule dictate a lack of research. I
should have asked more questions about the paint job I was paying for.
Lesson learned and I stand corrected. Thank you for your time and
response.
