6, 7, and 8 speed chains are all the same One width chain . At least any
SRAM , KMC, Wipperman and Shimano are . Some derailers with their
indented plates simply leave little room for lateral movement. You crank
is likely less than perfect straight , they all var slightly. Some much
worse than others .

Sometimes playing with the angle of the FD cage can help, this is trial and
error in a workstand. Sometimes not.

FWIW, I like the less or no indented old Shimano FD. Like early Deore's .

However, I use a Shimano 105 double from around 1999, FD-5500 I think,
anyways any Shimano double on the lower end , like Tiagra(marketed as 8/9
speed) , works fine with triples. I have it on a 24/36/50 XD crank on my
road bike . It shifts fine . Double FD cages are relatively straight,
with minimal indentations inside the plate , so they have more room for
lateral play . Plus, they just shift great !
