Alan, I'm a firm believer that if you can tackle 75% of your target ride 
leading up to it, you'll be able to do the whole thing when it counts.  A 
good plan is probably to ensure your bike setup is adequate for you for at 
least 75 mile rides of similar terrain, and then don't make any last-minute 
changes before the event.  Then you'll have one answer.
And be careful in the crowds.  It's amazing what stupid things people do 
while riding in events.
