3 packs a day -- wow! I asked the convenience store clerk the other
day how much a pack of M's cost nowadays, and he said $7.60 before
sales tax.
IIRC they were thirty cents a pack in the 'Nam in 1970.
One of the motivational techniques I used to use was every day I dropped
as much money as I would have spent on cigarettes that day into a coffee
can. When it amounted to something, I'd buy myself something nice - a
camera lens, for example. After all, I would have spent it anyway! And
if you do that today, just think how fast it would add up.
I was on a ride a couple of years ago by myself, stopped at a MacDonalds
to use the rest room and to eat my sandwich. A guy comes out, lights up
and we get into a conversation. He sees I'm a cyclist and says he's
sorry, hopes the cig doesn't offend me, etc., then says he's tried and
he wishes he could quit. So I ask him, would he quit if I gave him
$5,000. "Hell yes!" So I told him about the coffee can, and how he
could pay himself the money. If he smoked 3 packs a day, at $7.60 a
pack, in a year that would be $8,322. Snakes alive!
