Actually, this is first gen. No zipper. Just two twist tabs as shown. If you over-stuff it, the opening does spread, but not enough to lose anything. Frankly, the zippered bags are better. I used this without, however, with no problems. Access to interior is fine. Not sure what you mean by empty. It just hangs there.
