Actually, this is first gen. No zipper. Just two twist tabs as shown. If you 
over-stuff it, the opening does spread, but not enough to lose anything. 
Frankly, the zippered bags are better. I used this without, however, with no 
problems. Access to interior is fine. Not sure what you mean by empty. It just 
hangs there.

I'm thinking about  changing my Saluki bag setup from the Barley bag to a front 
bag and a small saddle bag in back.  I would want to put a spare tire, levers, 
multi tool & wallet in it.
The zippered opening looks small, can you easily see what's in the bag?
What does the shape look like empty?
