If you're going to be between derailers anyroad, go without a FD, use a 
stick shift. It's not the solution for everyone, but going without it will 
teach you a surprising amount. At least it has me. (I ride FD free, a wide 
double (my big chain ring is a rock guard) with my 38T a narrow-wide to 
keep the chain on and my 24t one I only use bikepacking trails).
