As a masher of long standing (whoops! an unintended pun!) I have to say, be careful of your knees. I've been very fortunate, having from my adolescence pushed big gears (except for a brief period when, influenced by Bicycling Magazine's advice on spinning, my cruising gear was 64" in which I would cruise at 21-22; riding fixed made me mash again) but even at age 16-17-18, I would feel twinges in my left knee after energetic hilly rides, and at 60, even a short ride without care leaves the left knee twinging. I've learned to stand, or alternate standing and sitting, for relatively long periods -- in fact, in the right conditions, I can stand and remain aerobic for what for me are long periods.
