I switched the conventional 46/36/24 X2D setup for a 38/24 and I have most
of the range and easier shifting. I've set it up for largely flat but sandy
terrain, where with pavement a range from mid 80s to 40" is ample; the 24
takes me down to 25" for the very occasional steep hills like those I rode
today, up the side of our West Mesa, with a nasty westerly in my face.

38/24 X 13-14-15-16-17-18-20-23-27; the triple was something like 46/36/24
X 16-17-18-19-20-22-24-27-30, with the crank set up so that the 46 was the
cruising ring.

Neither of these are good (as I know from experience) on steep singletrack,
where you want those intermediate gears from 60 down to 30 or so, but for
my flat-land-with-panic-hills, the double is great.
