Patrick,
Bummer about the incident. Most of the time, figuring out routes to places 
is trial and error. Now you know to pick another way. I've fine-tuned my 
commute, taking a rarely used road behind a shopping center and hauling my 
bike up a flight of stairs by a bridge - this cuts out the most hectic part 
of my commute. 
Like others, I try not to engage with upset motorists, but I'm no saint - 
if I've had a long day and am in a poor mood, I've been known to "engage" 
just a little bit. Working on it though...
