I tend to do long rides in Voler cycling shorts that fit well and don't cost as much as other lycra brands. But a gusseted short with either capilene boxers such as this for hot weather http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/mens-active-classic-boxers?p=45096-0-660 or wool for not so hot weather http://tinyurl.com/ygahx57 works really well for stop & start riding and shorter rides. A B17 doesn't require padding for my riding comfort. I have a Brooks Swift on one go-fast bike and I do like a padded short for that saddle.
