We really don't know how many miles on her BB. We bought the bike from the
2nd owner a few years ago. She hadn't ridden it much & said the original
owner had only toured a bit before selling it. My wife has put a few
thousand miles on the bike but I doubt it has over 10,000 total. I bought
my Atlantis in early '03, and the SN is a bit higher but then a 47 cm frame
could have sat around for a few years before selling. My original BB went
about 25,000 miles. Both bikes have always been in a fairly dry climate
although mine has seen it's share of water on trips. I'm thinking time may
have allowed the grease in hers to dry up, leading to an otherwise
premature demise. Both BBs were the Tange that Rivendell installed as
OEM. Since my bike has well over 50,000 miles, I was actually expecting to
replace the Shimano BB it but it turns easily and doesn't make expensive
noises. I may replace it anyway next time I have the cranks off.
