Yep, I noticed the same on my Hilsen's Phil BB last fall. Similar situation. I was putting a new chain on and noticed the grinding when I turned the crank. I replaced the bearings (actually the great shop in New Haven did it since I live in a hotel.) It should make it through brevet season and PBP just fine now. I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure the bb had >10,000 miles on it.
