I was thinking about this some more and what it says to me is that we
should support competition. Shimano thinks we're a captive audience,
while they meanwhile outsource lower end parts production to poorer SE
Asian economies and additionally with less money spent on R&D. Only
the high zoot stuff is still made in Japan.

This part for example looks pretty nice and performs a similar
function with similar ratings to Shimano rear road derailers:

available here:

Shimano upped some of their ratings on their derailers after SRAM came
out with the Apex that was rated to handle 11-32 casettes. But the
old ones (long cages) were rated similar to the Microshift above. And
I don't know that I believe that Shimano actually changed anything to
achieve the higher rating, IMO. They probably just figured that their
ratings were conservative and they had some wiggle room.

Grant has in the past given Microshift parts a chance and I appreciate
him for it.

I'm pretty sure if Riv had issues with derailers snapping in half,
they would pull them off their site. That being said Riv has never
sold Tiagra to my knowledge.
