Both my mother and father are Filipino and we also had a supply of canned sardines growing up and I've always enjoyed them. I keep a stash now.
FWIW, I've come to really enjoy the sardines in olive oil from Wild Planet <http://www.wildplanetfoods.com/product/wild-pacific-sardines-in-extra-virgin-olive-oil/>.
