I tend to agree. The decaleur and the tombstone serve positioning functions, while the rack supports the weight. I use a VO randonneur rack and separate decaleur, and it works well. Initially I thought the decaleur too fragile, but it's held up well for two years now. Its main function is the same as the strings on an Acorn bag... To keep the top of the bag in the correct position. So long as the tombstone prevents the bottom of the bag from shifting, the decaleur is fine.
