Och! Michael. They have no idea what the appendix does, if anything, let 
alone what muckles it to the point of trying to kill us by exploding. 
Sardonic grin. In my case, I had an appendicolith, a wee calcified stone 
that blocks the appendix. They said the best knows cause is "it just 
happens." My best guess is speculation and I have no way to prove it one 
way or the other, but the effect of grains and their anti-nutrients on the 
intestinal wall is highly abrasive -- so I can't help but wonder if that 
may have contributed to the original lodging on the irritant that 
eventually calcified. But that all gets into diet stuff that many here 
prefer to avoid, so that's all I'll wonder about that here.

More good news, however, was that the surgeon did not get confused and 
remove my left appendix. They must not get much humor at the surgical ward 
(don't they know they're supposed to be like the surgeons in M*A*S*H*?), 
because that lame joke kept them laughing a while. Grin.
