Dang! That sounds like a Reader article... Photos? The only thing I'd be mindful of would be pushing sand/dirt into the bearings using this method. The nice thing about the "Grease Guard" ports was that they were typically in the middle of the mechanism, so that the force pushed grease out from both ends.
