Hi Ray, for my commute in san francisco and local trails in the marin
headlands I've been using jack brown blues on my romulus and jack
brown greens on my quickbeam, although I don't take my QB on the
trails as often as the romulus. Even though the jack browns lack any
off-road tread as is found on something like schwalbe xr (which I have
tried) I’ve never found the lack of tread to be an issue on the trails
around here and, of course, they are more pleasant for the road
portions of the ride.

Having tried most of the tires listed in this thread the jack browns
are still my favorite for these bikes and local riding conditions.
Even though they are on two very different bikes I don't notice much
difference in feel or weight between the blues vs. greens and have not
yet had an external puncture on either after a year of riding with the
jack browns (initially I did have several pinch flats on the jb blues
when used in combination with a velocity synergy rim, but haven't
recently).

My all-time favorite road tire is still the grand bois cypres 700x30
but they are expensive and wear more quickly, so for our local riding
conditions I have found the jack browns ideal.

Good luck on your tire quest,
