1. I've used KMC, Wipperman/Connex, and SRAM masterlinks and chains and have had no problems with any of them, though I change my chains at 2000 miles because they are worn out or close to it at that point.
2. The Connex had the easiest-to-use masterlink, the KMC the worst, but I've never had problems with SRAM's and rarely need any tool except opposable thumbs. When, rarely, I do, I use needlenose pliers if lotsa WD40 don't work. 3. I've used a 8 speed link on a 10 speed chain, but the bike in question was a fixie. I think you can probably get away with 8 on 9, but you'll have a bit of rub on the fatter link. I don't know if 1 rubbing link will make a real difference, but an 8 sp chain on a 9 sp cog won't work at all well (I recently got one to work with very fiddly lever adjustment, but only in the central cogs).
