And will a master link that works on an 8-speed chain also work on a 9-speed chain? I ask because I have a 9-speed SRAM chain on my Sam and a KMC 8-speed chain on my old Miyata mountain bike. Would love to buy a few KMC master links--of the same size--to keep handy and to use on any chain that needs fixing. Is this possible?
No it will not. The width of the 8 and 9 speed chains are different, and so the master links are of different widths as well. (I've tried, with SRAM links and SRAM chains. It doesn't work.)
I have used a 3rd party master link (can't remember for sure, but may have been a Wippermann) on a Shimano chain, instead of using the Shimano break-away replacement pins. That worked great, and for many thousands of miles.
