My reference above is to using the nylon and King / new Nitto style without straps. In my experience the straps themselves provide an assist to getting into the pedal. Even with fairly thick shoes and socks the rider can tell almost instantaneously whether properly in the cage or not. Riding half clip without straps you really do not feel the clip until putting full weight on the pedal. When hurrying from a traffic light on crowded streets that can result in misplaced feet squishing the half clip.
