Drive side or off-side?

Unless it's the lighting, it looks like the entire load has been on half
the tire (give or take). When the tread is worn this far, the tire is worn
out (or get ready to fix a lot of flats). I'm a bit lighter & regularly
get over 5,000 miles out of a Schwalbe. People often put on a new pair,
ride across the country with no problems, and have plenty of life left in
them at the end.

Check the rim for out of roundness. If it's a bit tweaked that could
explain the heavy wear in one area. Ian's movie idea sounds worth doing,
and it could be a bad tire.
