Absolutely. I was an Ordnance Corps. officer many years ago, and we actually had a class in Field Expedients. I recall them telling us about how to gap points with some kind of wrapper (cello or shiny metal coated paper) from a pack of cigarettes, and other similar techniques. You don't always have the benefit of proper tools and repair parts out in the field, and sometimes lives depend on getting equipment working.
