I believed in running 35mm tires on tours until I tried Schwalbe
Marathon Supreme 50's on my Bombadil for a long tour this summer. What
a great tire! They rolled wonderfully, I could run them at a lower
pressure for a smoother ride without worrying about pinch flats and
they made every road surface, including mild single track and dirt
roads, a pleasant experience. I'm sold!

I'll also add that I weigh 200 pounds and was touring with a 35-40
pound load. Overall weight and riding surface are the factors that
should come into play in any decision about tire choice. I run Jack
Brown's (33.333) on my Atlantis for road riding, 35mm Paselas on
another bike for road, 50mm Marathon XR's on the Bombadil for off
road, and 28's on my "go fast" road bike. However, the 28's really
beat me up on our rough roads. It's a noticeable difference when I
ride fatter tires on the same bike over the same course. When the 28's
wear out, I'll use Jack Brown greens on that bike.

I've used 65mm Planet Bike Cascadia 29r fenders on the tour this
summer with the Supreme 50's. The fenders were a little too big with
those tires. However, they were durable and worked great on and off
road. The long mud flaps were a plus in the rain.
