Faster times, yes, but so what? In a race, it matters that you beat 
the next guy. If all are on aerobars, then you just shift the 
spectrum of times, and Beryl still would be fastest by a bit.

The only time the equipment makes a large difference is when some 
riders use it, and others don't. Greg LeMond's 1989 Tour win is a 
good example.

Times like that also show what provides an advantage and what 
doesn't. For example, indexed shifting and even STI co-existed in the 
pro peloton with traditional friction shifting through much of the 
early 1990s, and there appears to be no clear trend that one 
technology was superior. The same about clipless pedals.

By the way, Beryl Burton's famous victory was in the 24-hour time 
trial, where she set a record for both men and women.
