I was surfing the other day and came across various websites mentioning or devoted to Beryl Burton; surely she was one of the 20th century's top cyclists? One famous anecdote described how, in 1967, entered in some longish time trial -- I forget which distance or time -- she started out at the usual tme behind her predecessor, a man, and after an hour or so, she passed him, at which point she offered him a stick of liquorice, since "The poor dear looked all in." (The other rider politely said, "Ta, luv.") She went on to post the best time, beating the fastest man by a considerable margin.
Another time trial, this time competing against, inter alia, one of the contemporary Tour hopefuls: Garimaldi or Garibaldi or somesuch. She came in within five minutes of his time! And all of this while she was a working mother! Unfortunately, she died at 58 (gad! just 4 years older than I!) from a heart attack while riding.
