ok, im a hat guy. im into hats. i own a LOT of hats. I'm not saying my opinion is more valuable, just that ive thought a lot about hats, worn a lot of hats, and have very definite opinions about hats. ok, on second thought, maybe my opinion is more valuable than people who just own one or two or three hats. i ahve an uncounted number of hats. I have pith helmets, multiple pith helmets, fer crying out loud. i have expensive panamas. etc.
as to the issue of brim width. I have gone very wide. i ahve gone narrow. a think sometimes, IMHO, we tend to get a little nutty with the brim size. a bit too wide. look, evena narrow brim provides decent protectionw hent he sun is directly overhead. you only need the sup wide ness when the sun gets a bit lower. so it depends on what you're doing. if you're only out in the middle of the day, narrow can do the job. if it's an all day affair, maybe another inch to the crim. or better yet, a bit of sunscreen on the expsoed tips. I like the tilley hats. i had a tilley hat i wore intot he ground and then for some unkown reason sold on ebay for way mroe than it was worth, i think. i wish id kept it. i thought id be happy with the tilley type copies i own. im not. i liek the tilley for some reaosn. my kids said it looked like a "baby bonnet". id ont care. it was great because it was super prortable, roll it up. id wash it, it'd shrink. but get a 7 buck hat stretcher off ebay (you;ll need one if you wash cotton hats) and youre back in business. tilly to me is a great all around hat. if you needed on super utilitay hat, the smaller brimmed tilley for me would be sufficient. a pith helmet though, gets way mroe style points. check village hat shop website, big dealer in sd, ca. good service. i hate polyester. i hate those drapey baseball hats with sun tails. i hate baseball hats. TARGET has some very very ncie quality super cheap cottony fedora sun hats. i often just wear a cotton fedora purchased large to pull down while bike riding. if you dont liek the TILLEY, it's very ebayable. there is usually something wrong with all the tilley copies.
