i started with a pair of col de la vies on my bleriot. i wanted something better for trails, but couldn't afford a new set of tires, so i just bought one Fatty Rumpkin for the rear. that dragster setup worked just fine for me. no problems at all... and that's about a 5mm difference in size from approx 35 up to 40. eventually i wanted a light road tire and moved on to a pair maxy fasties. that move did make a big noticeable difference in ride. those are light tires. i never tried to use just one of those (similar to a nift/swift) with another tire. i will say though, that when you're riding on fatter tires, they are predictable. you know how they'll react to whatever comes along. the same is true for skinny/slicks. but when you mix them up, how do you know what to expect around the corner?
