Any erratic steering symptom makes me think of the headset. I know I've experienced not-so-smooth steering with a bum Dura-Ace (whose seals had been broken) long before I discovered it was actually indexing.........just a thought. If the seals are still good and it's adjusted properly it should be as smooth as the day you got it. Maybe it is a "tire/loaded, unloaded/front rear" issue, but it seems it would have come up before now.
