Re: GB Cypress failures

I had the same thing happen to one of two Cypress tires. In my case
it was the front that developed the bulge, after at most 300 miles of
use. The tread still looks like new. It looks like either a few
cords in the carcass of the tire have broken or the plies have
separated to allow the bulge. The bulge was far from contacting the
fork, but it was unpleasant to ride (thump, thump, thump) and I did
not want to risk a total failure and blowout. For the record, I weigh
between 175 and 180 depending on the phase of the moon, didn't ride
the bike with more than a minimal load, and only on pavement.

I rotated the other Cypress to the front and replaced the bad tire
with a Maxy Fasty. The MF weighs 360 gm to the GB's 300, but I feel
little difference on the road. I'm keeping a close eye on the
remaining GB, and keeping the inflation pressure lower than before in
case that makes a difference.

The GB's fit VERY loosely on the Synergy rims. Looser than the CdLV's
on my commuter, looser than any other tire of any size I ever
mounted. I have to take special care to keep the bead down into the
rim as I inflate the tire. They seem fine once seated, but I'd rather
have a snugger fit. I have a another Maxy Fasty standing by for when
the second GB goes south, and for now don't plan on going back.

It's a little surprising to me that any Riv would have a brake bridge
so low that a bulging Cypress could even come close to it. I'd expect
any 650b Riv would take at least a CdLV, if not a Fatty Rumpkin. Was
this a conversion from a 559 bike?
