To your question . . . It appears that there are a couple of versions of the Dia Compe 287V. I have an older set - these have a plastic piece at the very top of the lever that is held in place by a 2mm hex bolt - the bolt and the plastic piece must be removed to install the cable. You'd know for sure if you have it!
