Subject: [RBW] Re: BB width question, now chainrings

I originally wanted a 48 big ring but that crank set was available at
a good price with the 50t. I thought about purchasing a 48t chainring
but am hesitant to shell out the extra bones. I've noticed some places
sell Sugino rings at a fair price but they are advertised as being
without pins and ramps, will they still work fine on a double crank
with 8 speed rear?

For example:

Mike:

Riv has 48T x 110 BCD for $30 & Loose Screws for $31. These are the plain
Sugino, no pins or ramps. I looked for pinned & ramped when I replaced my
middle & outer and they were a great deal more money but I don't recall how
much.

While the pins & ramps probably help, getting the outer cage of the FD down
to a close clearance with the big ring seems to be key to shifting
performance. I'd run the 50T for a while & keep my eye out for a 48T on
sale or the bargain table at my LBS.
