Affect on front shifting? > It's not critical, just important. 1/4 inch isn't a huge amount, given that a chain on an 8 speed cassette can be deflected almost an inch. In my ignorant days, before "chainline" was even a mental conception, I put many miles on home builds with chainlines hugely off, and didn't notice anything (well, except that the chain would tend to derail when you backpedaled; it worked fine going forward) until someone more knowledgeable pointed the problem out to me.
