There are bikes everywhere in NYC. NYC is both friendly and quite unfriendly for bikes depending on where you are at the moment. You will see riders at night with and without any kind of light or reflector. They will ride with or without helmets, Anything goes. New Yorkers are both crazy and tough--the city demands quick reflexes and constant alterness. It can be quite exciting.
However, there are many great rides that do not involve playing in automobile traffic. The circum Manhattan ride is something I have not done yet, but will this year. I ride along the Brooklyn and Queens water front with miles of car-free riding pleasure, with great views of the city, Jamaica bay etc. Aside from the beautiful central park rides, there is also Prospect Park in Brooklyn and I think there are some great rides in the Bronx as well. One can ride accross many of the bridges that connect Manhattan, Brooklyn Queens and the Bronx. If you are coming to NYC year think about cycleing, it is a great way to see the city.
